Brazil

Female

Born 1858, Died 1936

Born Serafina Augusta Mourão do Vale, Viúva Guerreiro grew up on a large farm near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She started studying piano at the age of 10.

In 1883, she met the Portuguese merchant and piano tuner, João S. de Oliveira Barreto. Shortly afterwards, they got married and moved to Rio de Janeiro. Alongside her husband, she ran the Ao Piano de Cristal house, a piano and music store. After her husband's death in March, 1900, she took over management of the establishment. About this time, Viúva also started to compose and edit her own music. She composed over 60 works: waltzes, polkas, xotes and mazurkas.

Viúva's brother introduced her to the magistrate Joaquim Augusto Guerreiro Lima. They were married in 1902. Sadly, Joaquim died within a few years at which point Viúva became known professionally as "Viúva Guerreiro” which means, "Guerreiro's Widow". Many of her compositions are featured on the Música Brasilis website under the composer name “Widow Warrior”.
