Jane Röckel (pseudonym Jules de Sivrai)
English
Female
Born 1833, Died 1907
Jane Jackson Röckel was born in Clifton, England in 1834 to Samuel Jackson, a painter, music lover and Röckel’s first piano teacher. She continued her piano studies with several teachers including Jacob Blumenthal, Molique and Clara Schumann. Röckel began composing at age 7, but didn’t take it seriously until her 30s.
In 1885, she married well-known composer Joseph Röckel. After the marriage, Röckel reduced the number of her appearances in order to work primarily as a piano teacher and composer.
Under her pseudonym Jules de Sivrai, Jane Röckel wrote about 200 compositions including 20 songs. The bulk of her oeuvre, however, consists of smaller piano pieces and fantasies on well-known melodies.
The Röckels spent considerable time and effort in organizing concerts. They were well connected to fellow musicians and composers as well as the local elite. One of her themed concerts, in 1885 was dedicated exclusively to compositions by women!
