Maria Wolowska was born in Poland in 1789. From an early age she showed great talent at the keyboard despite her lack of formal music education. She became the first professional female pianist in Europe. She crisscrossed Europe on tours, giving over 100 concerts in her lifetime. Audiences and music critics alike relished her lyrical style and virtuosic technique. Sadly, at the height of her career, she fell victim to the cholera epidemic of 1831.

Most of Szymanowska’s compositions were written between 1815 and 1820 and were published during her lifetime. Her compositional output numbers more than 110 works, mostly chamber music and solo piano pieces in the form of nocturnes, waltzes, polonaises, mazurkas, etudes, and minuets. The Six Menuets for the Pianoforte were first published in 1819. The originals can be viewed on imslp.org . All fingerings are editorial and offered as mere suggestions.
